Memories from Kilifi, a small coastal town north from Mombasa. The Kenyan coast definitely has a lot to offer, and we are looking forward to explore more some day!🤩Long, white beaches are typical for the coast, but Kilifi Creek, with turquoise waters, cute fishing boats and stunning views, is the true gem of Kilifi. Throwback to Mnarani Ruins in Kilifi, Kenya!🤩Mnarani was a Swahili settlement, established in the 14th century. The history of the foundation of the settlement is unknown, but most probably it was established by traders from Oman, who sailed with the monsoon winds from the Persian gulf and landed on the Kenya coast. As their businesses flourished, they settled along the coast, building villages and mosques – the old swahili word “Mnara” means tower, and refers to minaret. The population of the villages along the coast was mixed, with both local inhabitants and Arabs, later also people from India.Mnarani Ruins are located on a hill right above the beautiful Kilifi creek. The ruins are partly taken over by thick forest, and guarded by gigantic, old baobab trees. The ruins consist of remains of two mosques, parts of town houses, a deep well and a number of tombs. The best-preserved ruin is the structure of the Great Mosque. Mnarani settlement was fully abandoned by late 17th century, most probably because the well had dried up, but also because of frequent attacks by intruders.Mnarani ruins are easy to access from the Kilifi town. They are located in the southern side of the Kilifi Bridge, right next to the old ferry landing and Mnarani beach. Hells Gate National Park in the rift valley, close

Hells Gate National Park in the rift valley, close to Lake Naivasha, is famous for having inspired the creators of Disney's Lion King animation, and for the unique geology of the area, with rock towers, cliffs, deep gorges and hot springs, that keeps charming visitors❤️The wildlife in Hells Gate is rich, and unlike in most of the game viewing destinations, visitors are welcome to explore the park on foot or riding bicycles! We made a half-day self-guided bicycle safari in the national park, and it was a great experience, even if the day was mostly cloudy, and thus the landscapes were a bit grey.We rented bicycles from a local operator, just before entering the park. We followed the dirt roads in the valley, and made a loop called Buffalo Circuit. During the roughly 25 km ride we saw a lot of giraffes, zebras, antelopes, baboons and warthogs, some of them from a close range, some from a far. Throwback to December and Lake Naivasha! I just noticed that we never shared here pictures from our trip to Naivasha and surroundings just before Christmas, so let's take a short look what that area in the Great Rift Valley has to offer!🤩We started with a trek / trail run in Mount Longonot National Park. Mount Longonot is an extinct volcano, with a beautiful, dense forest growing inside the crater. It rises high above Lake Naivasha, and the trek up to the crater rim and around it offers wonderful views to Rift Valley.On the way up, trekkers can spot wildlife like giraffes, zebras, elands, impalas and Grant's gazelles, and there are also buffaloes and some lions in the Mount Longonot National Park area around the volcano crater. The hike up to the rim is less than 3 km, and the path around the rim is around 7 km, which means that the total distance of the trek is around 12,5 km. The cats of Stone Town 😍🐾Cats are everywhe

The cats of Stone Town 😍🐾Cats are everywhere in Stone Town, and it's impossible to walk along the alleys or in the parks without seeing them. They are the most active in the night time, and during the day most of them kill time by sleeping. Cute fellows, and very friendly too🥰Some of the stay cats have a very rough life, while part of them seem to be well taken care of. A local clinic tries to help improve their welfare and control the rising population by neutering them. Another throwback to Zanzibar, this time to Stone Town!Stone Town is the oldest part of Zanzibar City, the biggest town in Zanzibar. The historic trading town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, with a following description:"The Stone Town of Zanzibar is a fine example of the Swahili coastal trading towns of East Africa. It retains its urban fabric and townscape virtually intact and contains many fine buildings that reflect its particular culture, which has brought together and homogenized disparate elements of the cultures of Africa, the Arab region, India, and Europe over more than a millennium."The best part of visiting Stone Town is just walking around, preferably without a map, letting the narrow alleys lead you around new corners to different areas of the town. There are charming old buildings with beautiful, carved doors and wooden balconies, hundreds of small boutiques, lively markets and countless local restaurants.
